No. Only one 2FA method can be active at a time — if the authenticator app is set up, email verification is unavailable, and vice versa. To switch methods, contact support@maclear.ch to reset the current one, then set up the new method following the instructions in Article 21.
Why can only one 2FA method be active at a time?
Maclear's authentication system is built around a single-active-method architecture. When you log in with 2FA enabled, the system needs to know exactly which verification method to prompt — having two active methods simultaneously would create ambiguity in the authentication flow and could introduce security vulnerabilities. A single active method also simplifies account recovery: if you lose access, there is one clear path to resolve it rather than multiple conflicting options.
Which 2FA method should I choose?
The right choice depends on how you use your devices:
Authenticator app — recommended if you primarily use a smartphone. The app generates TOTP codes locally on your device, works offline, and codes cannot be intercepted via email or SMS. This is the more secure option of the two.
Email verification — more convenient if you frequently change devices or do not always have your smartphone available. Keep in mind that email-based codes are less secure than TOTP codes, as they depend on the security of your email account.
If security is your priority, choose the authenticator app. If convenience matters more, email verification is a viable alternative — just make sure your email account itself is protected with a strong password and its own 2FA.
How do I switch from one method to another?
Contact support@maclear.ch to reset your current 2FA method. The reset typically takes 1–2 business days after the support team confirms your identity. Once complete, set up the new method following the instructions in Article.
